What is a diode laser
and how does it work?


Treatment with a diode laser uses a concentrated beam of light. The concentrated light enables precise treatment of each hair.

The wavelength of the diode laser is 808 nm, which is ideal for transferring energy to melanin, the body’s natural pigment in the hair. This pigment converts the light into heat. During a treatment with the diode laser, the device sends controlled light pulses to the desired area. There, the light is absorbed by the melanin in the hair root.

Thanks to its pulse frequency and the resulting lower energy, the risk of burns can be reduced.

The aim of each treatment is to denature the proteins. These are found in the hair root and are essential for the growth of each hair. The heat that is applied during a treatment causes denaturation. When the proteins are denatured, the hair root is no longer supplied with nutrients and consequently falls out after some time. For the same reason, regeneration of the hair is prevented, which is the basic principle of many laser methods.


What are the advantages of
laser hair removal?


Using methods such as laser and IPL, you will have significantly less hair in the treated body areas in the long term, without having to shave or epilate on a regular basis.

Unlike epilation, the permanent methods will cause less to no pain if used properly. Depending on how often you shave and what products you use, you will save a lot of waste with permanent hair removal.

The costs are also reduced in the long run: You no longer have to spend money on razor blades or waxing treatments. The expensive treatments can pay off in the end.

Is hair removal using a diode laser permanent? 

Laser hair removal has the effect of permanently destroying the hair, including the hair follicle, and permanently preventing new growth. However, in each treatment only the active hair follicles are removed, in other words those that are not currently in a dormant state.


How many treatments are needed, and over what period of time?

It depends on a number of factors, including the area of the body to be treated, the color, the amount and density of the hair, etc. Typically, between 8 and 10 treatments are sufficient to remove 90% of the hair in the treatment area, although impressive results may already be visible on the first day.

Recommended treatment intervals are every 6-8 weeks, depending on the method and body area. This ensures that even the hair that was dormant at the time of the previous session(s) has grown and can now be eliminated.


Is the treatment unpleasant?

No! At first, there may only be a feeling of coldness on the area of skin the laser head is touching, similar to touching ice. This is caused by the cooling system. Then the laser is activated. You will either feel nothing at all or at most a slight pulling sensation, like plucking a hair with a pair of tweezers.

What should you be aware of before and after laser hair removal with the diode laser?

Before the treatment

  • Do not sunbathe or use a tanning bed for at least 4 weeks before the diode laser treatment. The lighter the skin, the more effective the treatment.

  • Do not go to a sauna or swimming pool/whirlpool for 24 hours before the treatment to avoid skin irritation caused by chlorine.

  • Do not pluck or wax your body hair for a period of 4 to 6 weeks before the diode laser treatment; only shaving is allowed.

  • Please shave the areas to be treated 1-2 days before the diode laser treatment.


After the treatment

  • Do not go to a sauna or swimming pool/whirlpool for 24 hours after the treatment to avoid skin irritation caused by chlorine.

  • After the diode laser treatment, you can shower and wash the treated area without any problems.

What other types of
laser hair removal are there?


Permanent hair removal with diode lasers or intense pulsed light (IPL) involves exposing the previously shaved hair to high-frequency light. The energy destroys the hair follicle so that the hair does not grow back. Several treatments are necessary to remove all the hair, because the light can only destroy the hair roots that are currently in a specific growth phase.

The difference between the two methods is the wavelength of the light. A laser uses a smaller light spectrum, which, according to ZDF, is supposed to lead to fewer side effects than with permanent hair removal using IPL.
